| 700 Seniors Cry S.O.S. Many seniors today are faced with the possibility of losing their homes due to high taxes; others are confronted with the uncertainty of accessing needed services. The average household income of seniors is progressively decreasing with age. Many seniors have incomes at or below the poverty line. A vast majority of sponsored immigrant seniors don’t receive any income for the first 10 years from the government. These financial pressures increase their stress levels and have detrimental effects on their mental and physical health. To address these, and other critical issues and concerns expressed by senior residents of Vaughan, the Seniors’ Association of Vaughan Initiative (S.A.V.I.), with the support of Regional Councillor Mario Ferri, Founder and Honourary Chair of SAVI, and in partnership of Human Endeavour, CHATS, Ontario Coalition of Senior Citizens (OCSCO), Immigrant Seniors Advocacy Network and other stakeholders, organized “Summit on Seniors”. Regional Councilor, Mario Ferri, Founder and Honourary Chair for SAVI did the opening remarks and was the Master of Ceremony. Focus of the conference was on discussing the Financial DIfficulties of Seniors. Noor Din, Chair of SOS, Executive Director Human Endeavour and Vice President of SAVI gave a presentation on Financial Difficulties of New Immigrant and Fixed Income Seniors. Deborah Egan, Executive Director of Community Home Assistance to Seniors delivered a presentation on Cost of Community Support Services and Care Givers and Isabella Ferrara, Preseident of SAVI deliver a presentation on Fair Taxation System Three major parties at the federal and provincial level were present at the summit to share their platforms and ideas. MP Dean Allison represented the Federal Government and PC party, MP Carolyn Bennett represented federal Libral Party and Irene Mathyssen represented federal NDP. MPP Greg Sorbara represented the Provincial Government and Liberal party, MPP Gerry Martiniuk represented PC part and MPP Michael Prue represented NDP. Noor Din, founder and executive Director of Human Endeavour organized and Chaired the conference. 700 seniors and organization were present at the conference.
