Human Endeavour & Tamil Seniors demand Justice and Peace in Sri Lanka
Markham, ON, February 7, 2009: Tamil Seniors group of Human Endeavour in Markham organized a peaceful demonstration in support of the Tamil civilians in Sri Lanka.
Due to war situation in Sri Lanka thousands of innocent civilian Tamils are stranded in Northern part of the country and are living in great danger. Over 300,000 Tamils are entrapped within a 300 square kilometer strip in the conflict zone cut off from basic necessities, such as food, clean water, shelter and medicines. Recently hundreds of civilians have been killed due to airstrikes and fighting.
Human Endeavour Organization (www.humanendeavour.org) believes in peace and support conflict resolution through dialogue. Our Tamil seniors group organized a peaceful demonstration to raise awareness of the critical situation in Sri Lanka and asked the Canadian Government to use its influence to protect the civilians in Sri Lanka.
Markham Councilor Logan Kanapathi said that “The seniors are representing the Canadian-Tamils and showing their support and prayers for the innocent Tamils caught up in the war. They are here to urge the Canadian government to put the pressure on Sri Lanka to stop the atrocities and violence against innocent civilians."
Noor Din, Founder and Executive Director of Human Endeavour in a message to the Sri Lankan Government said "It is the duty of Sri Lanka’s Government to protect the rights of all its citizens, regardless of their ethnic origin or political views. Every citizen of the country deserves the right to practice freedom of speech and religious beliefs, equal opportunity and safety”.
Srinivasan Supramaniam said that ‘We are hard working, law abiding Canadian Tamils who have built better lives for us in Canada. We are concerned about the genocide of Tamils in SriLanka and want to request/urge the Canadian Government to step up its efforts for the human rights for the Tamils in SriLanka.’
To ensure the safety of seniors and people on the road, a number of York Regional Police Officers and cruisers were present during the demonstration. Noor, Srinivasan, and Sylvia thanked YRP for making special arrangements for the safety of the participants and residents.
